“The right way to wholeness is full of fateful detours and wrong turnings”
- Carl Jung

A B O U T

I am an acclaimed artist/illustrator who enjoys exploring an experimenting with media. I guess it all started when I was about 8, as I was watching cartoons in the basement of my childhood home in Teaneck, New Jersey. I found myself obsessed with scratching doodles into a small coffee table. A few hours later I covered the whole thing, completely forgetting that maybe my parents wouldn’t really get the whole “doodle” vibe on the furniture. Well, my Dad was furious but he eventually got over it.

I’ve had a serious case of wanderlust ever since I was about 20 when I went to study graphic design in Brisago, Switzerland with Yale University. I ended up moving to Italy and living there for close to 3 years. I worked all kinds of jobs, just trying to figure out how I could make a living as an illustrator. Looking back now I can see that all the traveling in my 20’s lead me to discover that I truly wanted to be an illustrator. Being abroad helped me trust a different path. Carl Jung expressed this idea so well, “The right way to wholeness is full of fateful detours and wrong turnings”.

In 2016 I received my MFA from The Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC. When I graduated (with honors), I decided that I wanted to continue to push myself independently, beyond grad school. I began making art every day and posting it on Instagram (@carluccio7). I have been able to continue this practice pretty regularly even today. Instagram has become a place where I can experiment and strive to learn something new every day. You can learn more about my Instagram practice here.

Presently, I teach illustration at Columbus College of Art and Design, you can learn more about that here. I also teach online classes at Creative Bug, you can learn more about those classes here. I have written and illustrated lots of children’s books and seen my art come to life on products such as greeting cards, fabrics, puzzles and in magazines, to name a few. I’ve also been blessed to have traveled (with my sketchbook in tow) to many countries, which has satisfied my wanderlust…for now.
