T E A C H I N G
I have been an Assistant Professor at Columbus College of Art and Design for the past 7 years. Presently I teach the following classes: Children’s Books, Children’s Markets, Portfolio Practices, Illustration Markets, Traditional Media and Illustrative Figure Drawing. I strive to develop projects that offer clear goals and objectives, while also allowing students the openness and flexibility to interpret each assignment. I want students to find their own way “into” my projects and I know this may look different for each person. I lead by example, demonstrating my own process for generating ideas and creative solutions. We always have fun daily drawing prompts that stretch students to use their imaginations and build confidence in their drawing skills. Illustration is a practice, and there are concrete ways to nurture a creative life in order to have a long, lucrative career in the arts. It is my goal to provide the necessary tools in order to succeed.
I demonstrate various techniques and provide inspiration through all stages of the process. I also encourage a rigorous drawing and ideation practice. We discuss and critique projects thoroughly and I provide continual feedback in order to mentor and encourage both artistic growth and professional time management/studio organization. In order to work successfully with clients an artist needs to learn where their work should be positioned as well as methods to garner the type pf work they desire. I have worked for large corporations such as Hallmark Cards as well as several advertising agencies and magazines in NYC and Milan, Italy. I have also had my own independent illustration business for the past 30+ years. I beleive my wide range of industry knowledge can provide a solid starting point for any artist seeking a career as a professional illustrator.
